How to use this calculator

  1. Choose your mattress. Pick a standard size or enter your own measurements.
  2. Choose a style or a drop. The drop is how far the quilt hangs over the sides and the foot of the bed.
  3. Add a pillow tuck if you want one. 10" lets the quilt fold under and over the pillows.
  4. Use the size. Plan your blocks to this finished size, then open the backing or binding calculator with one click.

How the quilt size math works

The quilt has to cover the top of the mattress and then hang down on both sides and at the foot. The head of the bed usually sits against a headboard, so there is no drop there, only an optional pillow tuck.

Quilt width = mattress width + 2 × dropQuilt length = mattress length + drop + pillow tuckWith shrinkage: both sizes × (1 + allowance), then rounded up to the next inch

Example: a queen mattress, 12" drop and 10" pillow tuck.

Width: 60" + 2 × 12" = 84". Length: 80" + 12" + 10" = 102".

With a 5% shrinkage allowance the quilt top should be 89" × 108".

Coverlet, comforter or bedspread?

These names describe how far a quilt hangs down. They are loose terms, so use them as a starting point and adjust the drop to your bed.

Coverlet12"84" × 102"The side of most mattresses
Comforter15"90" × 105"Mattress and part of the box spring
Bedspread21"102" × 111"Down toward the floor on a standard bed

Measuring your bed

Measure the width and length across the top of the mattress with any mattress topper in place. Then measure the depth, from the top surface down the side. Your drop should be at least the mattress depth if you want the side covered, and more if you want to hide a box spring or bed frame.

Deep mattresses and pillow tops can be 14" or more, so a 12" drop may not reach the bottom edge. If in doubt, measure from the top of the mattress to where you want the quilt to stop.

Common quilt size mistakes

  • Using the mattress size as the quilt size. A quilt the size of the mattress will not hang over the edges at all.
  • Ignoring mattress depth. Measure your own mattress, especially a deep or pillow-top one.
  • Forgetting shrinkage. Dense quilting and washing make a finished quilt smaller than the top.
  • Trusting size names. A "queen" pattern from one designer can be a different size from another's. Check the finished size.

Questions about quilt sizes

What size is a queen quilt?

A queen mattress is 60" × 80". With a 12" drop on the sides and foot and a 10" pillow tuck, a queen quilt is about 84" × 102". Many patterns sell larger "queen" quilts, often around 90" × 108", for a longer drop. Measure your bed and choose the drop you like.

What size is a king quilt?

A standard king mattress is 76" × 80". With a 12" drop and a 10" pillow tuck, that makes a quilt about 100" × 102". A California king is narrower and longer, at 72" × 84".

How much should a quilt hang over the edge of the bed?

That is the drop. 12" covers the side of most mattresses and is a common choice for a coverlet. 15" or more reaches further down, and around 21" reaches toward the floor on a standard-height bed. Deep or pillow-top mattresses need a bigger drop to cover the same amount.

What is a pillow tuck?

A pillow tuck is extra length at the head of the quilt that folds under and over the pillows. 10" is common. Leave it out if the quilt will sit below the pillows.

Do quilts shrink?

Quilting pulls the layers in, and cotton can shrink when washed, so a finished quilt is often a few percent smaller than the top. If you want a size after washing, add a shrinkage allowance: with 5%, a queen quilt planned at 84" × 102" becomes 89" × 108".
